I wrote this poem because I think it is important to help develop and understand your ethics and morals. In order to successfully be part of a community, and to be part of the growth of that community, you have to be able to look at yourself in the mirror and know your flaws. Before you can make the world a better place, you have to start with making YOURSELF a better person!Â
JUST HOW EXACTLY DO WE DEVELOP OURSELVES INTO BEING BETTER PEOPLE?Â
HOW DO WE FORM STRONG AND RIGHTEOUS MORAL AND ETHICAL CODES?
1. HELP YOUR NEIGHBOR LITERALLY & FIGURATIVELY.
Shovel a snow-covered driveway for an elderly neighbor. Hold doors open for strangers. Give a homeless vet a cigarette.Â
By taking the time to acknowledge our neighbors and to show them we care about them by offering our help, we can help cultivate and craft a more unified and vibrant community for all!
Shoot someone a smile. Accept those you don't understand. Find your capacity for love and TRY to treat everyone with equal passion. You're making a huge difference, even if you can't provide your full capacity.Â
You should never underestimate the impact that positive words of encouragement or support can do for an individual!
You have the power to communicate words which can change lives!
All life is divine, as a creative expression of God. The divine is everywhere around us! It's in the trees, It lies within your dog, It even whispers in the wind!
When you recognize the Divine is in everything you can look at everyone and understand them to be what they truly are-Â a reflection of yourself and God!Â
We are all equal. We are all one. We are all part of the divine... so let us act like it! Â
In my poem when I mention “Gravitate towards truth” what I am referencing is Shakespeare’s famous lines from Hamlet, "To thine own self be true."
By adopting a moral and ethical code we are holding ourselves to a higher standard which can be a difficult and challenging task, especially when we are confronted by temptation and lesser passions.
To be true to one’s own self means to recognize who you are as a spiritual being. When you are being true to your self you are making the conscientious effort to be a better person and to act in a dignified and enlightened manner.
When we act on this higher level, we cultivate love, creativity, inspiration, and community!
However, when we give in to our base desires and passions, we can hurt those around us and create conflict and drama.
Be certain with your actions. Remain pure in your conquests. And remember to be true to yourself as a spiritual being!
Everyone has unique experiences and insight that can add value to others lives. You don’t have to be a celebrity or an Astronaut to have a story to tell others! Â
People learn from the challenges of others. By sharing and relating past obstacles and episodes from our lives we can help connect people across generations and cultures!
In my poem when I say “Only you can” I am referencing how individuals can’t rely on others to share and tell their story- they have to communicate it first to others!
If we open ourselves to sharing and comparing our gained knowledge, we can contrast them constructively with the experiences of others, allowing for the creation of new SHARED perspectives!
Every person has their own version of “the truth”, but through constructive dialogue, we can combine perspectives and create a community-centric view of “the truth”. There is a reason they say sharing is caring… by sharing our life experiences with others we help cultivate LOVE- for ourselves and for others.
We are all spiritual beings of light. When I say “Illuminate the way” I am trying to create a call-to-action for individuals who want to impact their community for the better. To Illuminate the Way is simply put to spread the light of wisdom... Cast your glow onto the shadows. Influence positive change. Show what you know.
If we all spread wisdom then we can effectively “Echo the message” and spread positive intentional vibrational energy throughout our social network. Think of a small stone that is tossed into a pond and which causes a pleasant ripple effect… if we put good energy and good intentions out there, there is no telling what effect it can have on those around us!
I finish the poem with the line “Save the world”. We live in anxious and stressful times. People are politically, culturally, and racially divided. Americans are nervous about the future- but we don’t have to be!
If we all focus on the greater mission of “Save the World” than we allow ourselves to be dedicated to a noble higher cause. When individuals set their goals and motives to noble higher causes, the Universe blesses them and rewards them with providence!
We need to all start thinking about the bigger picture and less on our earthly, material desires which only serve to distract us and limit us. Â
It ultimately all starts at home. It starts in your heart. It starts in your DMV neighborhood.
