Scott Wharton @ The Fredericksburg Comedy Club

HOODIE GOODIES: Hello, Hi! Welcome and thank you for joining us, how are you doing today?

Scott Wharton: Hey! Good morning! I’m doing great thanks for checking me out.

HOODIE GOODIES: To Begin, Can you tell us who you are, what you do, and where you are from?

Scott Wharton: Absolutely! I’m Scott Wharton, I’m a comedian, and I’m from Fredericksburg Virginia.

HOODIE GOODIES: What kind of comedy do you do and where have you performed at?

Scott Wharton: Well, I’ve performed at Hard Times Café at Four Mile Fork in FXBG, and Adventure Brewing Company in Stafford and FXBG, as well as the Fredericksburg Comedy Zone.
Scott Wharton: I recently was able to travel to Paducah Kentucky and perform at Dry Ground Brewing Company and at a venue called Tidball’s in Bowling Green Kentucky.
Scott Wharton: In the past, I have performed at the Comedy Smackdown at the Funny Bone in Richmond Virginia. Really good stuff, fun times!

HOODIE GOODIES:
Okay! Scott, why are you a comedian? What is your goal with all of this? What is motivating you?

Scott Wharton: To make people laugh. And make money by doing something I love to do. I think that’s important. Like, comedy is something I always gravitated towards, I was the class clown, you know? I always had an affinity for comedy, I’d watch comedy central 30-minute stand up as a little kid, it’s just something I always have loved and enjoyed.

HOODIE GOODIES: So how did you start with comedy?

Scott Wharton: So, I was working as a laborer and worked for a tree company, and I didn’t feel like I was satisfied. Like it felt good and wholesome as intense physical activity, but it just wasn’t making me feel happy.  And so, I had that going on and I was also doing a lot of tripping and psychedelics.

Scott Wharton: I think psychedelics help open your mind and I was having these profound experiences and realizations.

Scott Wharton: At the same time, I was doing all the tripping I was watching and listening on Pandora Radio all this stand-up comedy like Daniel Tosh and Richard Pryor, and something inside me was like “You can do this”. I knew if I could make people laugh already while tripping, I could probably do it on stage at a comedy club. I’m that guy that is just always making people laugh, you know?

HOODIE GOODIES: How much do psychedelics play into your comedy?

Scott Wharton: Definitely a huge theme in my comedy. I mean, most of my material is based on real-life experiences I’ve had from tripping with friends, so that’s an important reason. I personally use entheogenic and psychedelic substances for their creative and inspirational effect, and it helps me really develop my work and myself. And I have a huge fan base that really appeals to this kind of culture and experience like I have this amazing and supportive grassroots fan base of cool people that are just like me and my friends here at home in Fredericksburg it’s just awesome.

Scott Wharton: Like, I can relate with all these people so much, and my comedy also appeals to a certain type of humor especially like the internet memes and conspiracy stuff I try and help people who are struggling with an existential crisis. People are out here so stressed out about politics, and conspiracy crap, and like IS THE ANNUNAKI MINING MY SOUL FOR GOLD? I don’t know man, but here are some funny jokes to make you not worry about that. *Laughter*

HOODIE GOODIES:
Wow! That’s deep man! Interesting stuff.

Scott Wharton: Ha-ha, thanks man. It’s true though, I really mean what I say.

HOODIE GOODIES: With all that being said, who are your top 3 inspirations in Comedy?

Scott Wharton: Ah I was hoping you’d ask me that. Hmm, I’d have to say my top 3 inspirations are Dave Chapelle, Joe Rogan, and Joey Diaz.
Scott Wharton: Dave Chapelle I’ve watched since I was a kid, he is such a huge motivation for me and comedy.
Scott Wharton: Joe Rogan is a huge influence because he has a similar style of comedy as he talks about entheogens and stuff.
Scott Wharton: Joey Diaz is a great influence because he is a great example of how your past doesn’t lock in or define your future. Joey Diaz used to be a huge piece of shit, but he flipped his life around to be more positive, and likewise, I relate with that, I’m not a perfect person but because I’m a comedian now I try and live a more wholesome existence then I did before.

HOODIE GOODIES: Well let me ask you this. How has being from FREDERICKSBURG and the DMV influenced your work and how has it influenced you?

Scott Wharton: Being from FXBG is like being in the true melting pot that America is supposed to be, the history and culture and heritage, people from all different walks of life, military and poor, and middle class. You meet people from so many different backgrounds and it gives you a great perspective.
Scott Wharton: Personally, I Came from a lower-class background, I grew up in a humble and small house and I would be hanging out with friends who live in nice family homes in neighborhoods like Fox Point and Lee’s Parke and who have parents that work for the Pentagon or Federal Government, so that kind of upbringing really affects how you view the world.
Scott Wharton: Fredericksburg is just an odd place like we have a downtown, we have the suburbs, we have the country and there are just so many people here. Sometimes I think Fredericksburg is a black hole lol like the Bermuda Triangle. I don’t want to be stuck here, I want to travel and see things. I’ve spent my whole life here, and I appreciate it, but I am ready for a change of scenery.

HOODIE GOODIES: What do you think is your best bit and why?

Scott Wharton: I got this amazing bit about my dog being on acid that I think is the greatest.
Scott Wharton: I love my dog, and people don’t necessarily realize but your skin secretes chemicals. So, when I take acid, I always thought how weird it would be if my dog when it’s licking my hand is accidentally getting a little dose you know?
Scott Wharton: Then I just get carried away thinking about what that would be like for my little buddy, like what is he thinking? Is he having self-doubt or an existential crisis about whether he is a good boy or not, I think that’s funny.

Scott Wharton: Do dog’s have an ego?

HOODIE GOODIES: Speaking of tripping and drugs, and weird moments, what’s the strangest thing you have ever seen?

Scott Wharton: Ha-ha, let’s see… Well probably one of my DMT experiences honestly. Those have been some of the most profound and strangest moments of my life. I one time saw a giant eyeball open up on a wall and blink and stare at everyone I was with in the room, it was perhaps one of the most surreal moments of my life. It freaked me out for sure.

HOODIE GOODIES: What’s the goal for 2020?

Scott Wharton: Well I definitely want to be well established as a professional by then, and be making some awesome moves. I want to have my brand more developed, and I want to be performing at more venues. I have a great idea for a Netflix show, and I hope I can pursue that soon. If anyone from Netflix is reading, seriously, please hit me up I got great content y’all would love!

HOODIE GOODIES: You are about to be going on tour, right?

Scott Wharton: Yep! So a friend and I are about to embark on a 6-month journey across the United States working, performing stand up comedy, doing volunteer work, making podcasts, and doing everything we can to put our name out there. We are calling this our LUMBER LAUGHS TOUR 2019 Most importantly we will be interacting with our fans and supporters from all over and getting the chance to meet them and thank them for their encouragement!

HOODIE GOODIES: Wow that sounds exciting Scott! We wish you the best of luck and keep us posted here at Hoodie Goodies on your developments!

Scott Wharton: Thanks, guys!
